GOP PUSHES TAX PLAN TO APPEASE THEIR DONORS. Republicans have repeatedly made clear that the motivation behind their tax plan is to appease their donors, not to help the middle class– a fact that even Mitch McConnell admitted over the weekend, saying that he “misspoke” when he said that nobody in the middle class would get a tax increase. Looking at the details of the Republican tax plan, that fact is obvious:

  • The Joint Committee on Taxation reported that EVERY income group under $75,000/year will see their taxes go up while the wealthy get a tax cut.
  • The Congressional Budget Office reported that the plan could cut Medicare by $25 billion.
  • Their decision to repeal the individual mandate would significantly spike health care premiums and cost millions their care.

TAX PLAN BECOMES HEALTH CARE BILL. With the inclusion of an individual mandate repeal, the Senate Republican tax plan has become nothing more than a vehicle for the GOP’s ongoing efforts to sabotage health care by spiking costs and driving up premiums for working families. That’s why a coalition of more than 15 nonpartisan patient groups and a group of six insurers, hospitals, and doctors – including America’s Health Insurance Plans and the American Medical Association – have all urged Republicans to get rid of repeal.

NEW THIS AM: ANOTHER GOP RECRUITMENT BUST. Congressman Fred Upton has chosen to run for reelection to the House, rather than run for Senate where he would have faced Michiganders angry over his tax plan that will raise taxes on the middle-class, while cutting taxes for the wealthy and his instrumental role in passing disastrous health care legislation that the AARP said would “be a step backwards in health care reform.”

“CHARACTER MATTERS” IN #ALSEN. This editorial from the editorial board appeared in three major newspapers across Alabama: Our view: Roy Moore grossly unfit for office.
By Editorial Board
November 13, 2017

  • Roy Moore simply cannot be a U.S. Senator. Even if his party and many of its adherents still think it possible, it is unthinkable — for his state, and his country.
  • The seriousness of these incidents cannot be overstated. They should not be parsed with talk of statutes of limitations or whether proof exists. Proof beyond a reasonable doubt is a consideration for the courtroom, not the ballot box. When choosing our representative before the rest of the world, character matters.
  • In our view, Moore has already revealed himself as grossly unfit to be a U.S. Senator before these revelations.
  • He has been twice-removed from statewide office for his defiance of the law. His views on women’s rights, same-sex marriage and religious freedom no longer reflect the majority of Alabamians. And they are incompatible with the governance of this country. He has said that the murderous 9/11 attacks on America and the tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut may have been God’s will because America had sinned.
  • Investigations into Moore’s nonprofit the Foundation of Moral Law, have revealed a man who champions himself above all else. Above Alabamians. And, yes, above God. Moore has used his platform to personally enrich himself and his family and to pursue his own, radical agenda.
  • His true character has been revealed. It’s time for the GOP to remove its official support. And since he and his party can’t assure it, the voters of Alabama must.

TBT: SCOTT IS “LOSER OF THE WEEK.” That’s how the Tampa Bay Times described Governor Scott’s “precarious” position as he attempts to balance his unwavering support for President Trump with his preparations to run for Senate in 2018. When asked whether Trump would be an “asset or liability” to candidates in 2018, including himself, Scott “demurred three times.”

“COMPLICATION” FOR MESSER IN #INSEN. A new development in “the GOP’s nastiest primary:”
Associated Press: Indiana candidate’s DC-area home complicates Senate campaign.

  • His family lives in McLean, Virginia, keeps a vacation house in Dandridge, Tennessee, yet sold their home in Indiana two years after his election to Congress in 2012. They now say a two-bedroom house Messer co-owns with his mom in Greensburg is the family’s Indiana residence.
  • One of his chief primary rivals, fellow Rep. Todd Rokita, has already seized on that as a line of attack. “Luke Messer doesn’t live in the state — I do,” Rokita told Indianapolis-based WXIN-TV in July. “I’m accountable to voters and taxpayers here. I live among them every week.” […]A memo from a Rokita strategist declared that Messer’s “decision to sell his home in Indiana” will be “the death knell of his campaign.”
  • Over the summer, Messer’s Wikipedia page was mysteriously edited to include a section titled “Residency controversy.” Messer blames Rokita, who denies responsibility. “Todd Rokita believes he can keep his own political career alive by attacking Luke’s family. He underestimates the fundamental decency of Hoosiers,” Bullock said.

#MTSEN CANDIDATE DOWNING CLAIMS RESIDENT TAX BREAK IN CA. This morning, the Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported that Troy Downing has been receiving a tax break on a property in California since 2005, “an exemption that is for homeowners if the home is their primary residence.” This new report comes after Downing said the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks “deep state” was conducting a “witch hunt” against him after being cited for “seven misdemeanors for unlawful purchase of or apply for resident license by a nonresident.”

Related: Even before these new allegations surfaced, the Bozeman Daily Chronicle editorial board had a piece of advice for Downing, saying that by “presenting half-baked conspiracy theories,” Downing’s attack “crosses a line. […] “Montanans will forgive a lot, but we aren’t likely to vote for someone found to be an out-of-stater who has violated our hunting laws.”

“NO GUTTER TOO DEEP” FOR MANDEL, PT. INFINITY. A member of Ohio State Treasurer Josh Mandel’s faith outreach team is defending Roy Moore against allegations of sexual misconduct and attacking his accusers.

MCSALLY “PIVOTS” TO TRUMP AFTER BOTCHED ROLLOUT. Since her “awkward” Senate rollout, Congresswoman Martha McSally has been mum, “dodg[ing] press” and “sidestepping questions” regarding her Senate run. But, as the Arizona Daily Star’s Tim Steller points out, she’s taken steps to “pivot to [a] pro-Trump position.”
Arizona Republic: In or out? Martha McSally drops hints but won’t reveal her Senate plans.

  • Congresswoman Martha McSally sidestepped questions about her political aspirations on Friday after a week of dropping hints that she plans to run for Arizona’s open Senate seat.
  • If McSally’s non-answer seemed to lack suspense, McSally had only herself to blame.
  • On Monday, she told her four Republican colleagues in Arizona’s House delegation that she planned to run for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Jeff Flake. Two days later, McSally, who had kept candidate Trump at arm’s length, tweeted a picture of herself with Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter, touting the GOP tax plan.
  • On Thursday, she was introduced on Fox Business as a Senate candidate. She responded by saying, “That’s not announced yet.”
