AS REPUBLICANS DISTANCE THEMSELVES FROM RNC’S OFFENSIVE FUNDRAISING PLAN, ROB PORTMAN REMAINS SILENT ON EVE OF MICHAEL STEELE VISIT TO OHIO
As more and more Republicans distance themselves from the controversial Republican National Committee campaign strategy to employ fear and smear tactics in 2010 and with RNC Chairman Michael Steele set to visit Ohio tomorrow, Rob Portman remains inexplicably silent. As POLITICO reported, the RNC is planning to raise money this year through “an aggressive campaign capitalizing on fear,” and a promise to “save the country from trending toward socialism.” With RNC Chairman Michael Steele visiting Rob Portman’s hometown of Cincinnati tomorrow, will Portman do the right thing and denounce the campaign strategy put forth by the RNC or will he appear on stage with Steele and give tacit approval to the fundraising strategy?
“Rob Portman’s Republican establishment friends have decided to engage in a campaign strategy based on fear and lies,” said DSCC National Press Secretary Deirdre Murphy. “Although he is a consummate Washington insider himself, will Rob Portman stand up to Michael Steele and the RNC, or will he give his approval to the offensive strategy by joining Steele in Cincinnati tomorrow?”
Rob Portman, the epitome of a Washington insider and the definition of the Republican establishment, has not distanced himself from the RNC’s offensive fundraising strategy. Portman also refused to distance himself from the controversial group COAST, Coalition Opposed to Additional Spending and Taxes, which referred to Ohio public officials as Nazis on its Web site. Eventually, Portman backed down and admitted the group’s statements were “ inappropriate,” but only after he helped them raise $15,000 at a fundraiser last week.
