Another Very Bad Morning for Richard Burr

Editorials,  front pages eviscerate Burr’s recently revealed comments

Senator Richard Burr’s nightmare week has only gotten worse since the onslaught of bad headlines he woke up to yesterday. Today, as North Carolinians continue to vote early and with only six days until Election Day, here’s what they saw:

Not one, not two, not three but four front page stories on his inexcusable “bullseye” comments and his pledge to block any Clinton-nominated Supreme Court nominee indefinitely.

Not one, not two, not three but four editorials criticizing Senator Burr’s dangerous and politically-motivated obstruction of the North Carolina Eastern District Court and U.S. Supreme Court:

Raleigh News & Observer: Editorial: A tape reveals the real Sen. Burr

Not only is North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr — in a tough re-election fight with challenger Deborah Ross — backing his Republican Party’s polarizing presidential nominee, Donald Trump, he’s now borrowing the Trump campaign playbook. Perhaps that’s not surprising. Even after a horrid tape emerged showing Trump’s despicable attitude toward women, Burr offered a brief criticism but doubled down on his support.

… What he said was an embarrassment to the state of North Carolina, and it was a potentially dangerous comment. Burr should be more than sorry. He should be ashamed.

… Burr’s been a low-profile senator of little accomplishment in his 12 years in office, but he’s raising his profile now in a way that does not speak well of him. In politics, Donald Trump is not a role model for an incumbent senator — or anyone else.

Winston Salem Journal: Editorial: We condemn Burr’s ‘bull’s eye” comment

There’s no use asking what U.S. Sen. Richard Burr of Winston-Salem was thinking when he joked that he was surprised a magazine about guns didn’t put a “bull’s-eye” on Hillary Clinton’s photo. It’s clear that Burr wasn’t thinking.

But it was a terribly sick joke to make, especially at this time in our nation’s history. The problem with such loose and ignorant comments from the prominent and powerful is that they help create a culture of violence, adding fuel to fires already raging in unhinged heads. Troubled, violent people might hear such comments from leaders and take it as tacit approval to carry out violent acts.

…We condemn Burr’s comment, which has no place in our discourse.

Charlotte Observer: Editorial: Richard Burr puts bull’s-eye on Constitution

Sen. Richard Burr’s critics are denouncing him for joking about putting a bull’s-eye on Hillary Clinton. But voters should be at least as concerned about Burr’s putting a bull’s-eye on the U.S. Constitution.

One was an inappropriate joke. The other is a very real threat to our government functioning the way the Founders intended.

No, to Burr, Cruz and others, a person’s qualifications are irrelevant if there are political points to be won or lost. It is ironic – no, deceitful – that these politicians claim to be “constitutional conservatives” and then eviscerate the Constitution. Article II, Section 2 says the president shall appoint Supreme Court justices with the advice and consent of the Senate.

WRAL: Editorial: If Burr won’t fill judicial vacancies, pick someone new to fill his Senate seat

There you have it. Sen. Burr is a world-class obstructionist.

…It is clear from his Mooresville appearance that Sen. Burr intends to keep playing politics with our courts if Clinton is elected. North Carolina needs a senator that respects our court system. The choice is obvious.

All of this terrible coverage comes amidst yet another devastating story for Burr about his role in “relaxing US controls” on the export of bomb-grade uranium:

Oh, and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow dedicated a segment of her show to Burr’s odd final week strategy of not telling the press where he’ll be campaigning.

How could things possibly get any worse for Burr? Stay tuned…it’s only Wednesday.
