Democratic Senate Candidates Post Record-Breaking Fundraising

“Energized” grassroots donors drive impressive second quarter for Dem challengers across the country

Democratic Senate challengers continue to gain momentum in key battleground states, reporting impressive fundraising in the second quarter of 2019 powered by small-dollar donations. As vulnerable Republican incumbents are haunted by their toxic records and weighed down by running with an unpopular president who’s losing support in their states, Democratic challengers are laying the groundwork to win.

As POLITICO’s Morning Score reported today: “A quartet of Democratic Senate hopefuls announced strong second quarters… Democratic donors still look energized for down ballot races.”

Here’s the latest Democratic fundraising success for Q2 in key Senate races:

  • ARIZONA: “Democrat Mark Kelly, the retired astronaut who is hoping to unseat Republican Sen. Martha McSally in Arizona’s 2020 Senate race, raised $4.2 million during April, May and June, exceeding his first-quarter fundraising. All told, he has raised $8.3 million since announcing his candidacy in February, and he has nearly $6 million cash on hand, according to his campaign. More than 85,000 contributors have donated to Kelly’s campaign, and more than 90% of his second-quarter donations were less than $100, highlighting his display of strength among small donors, his campaign said.”
  • IOWA: “Iowa Democrat Theresa Greenfield has raised more than $625,000 for her campaign against Republican Sen. Joni Ernst in less than a month since launching her bid… Her campaign emphasized its grassroots support in its first fundraising report, touting that 85% of her contributions were $100 or less and that she’s received contributions from 96 of Iowa’s 99 counties.”
  • MAINE: “Sara Gideon, the Democratic Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives, said she raised more than $1 million in the first week of her campaign to challenge incumbent Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine). Gideon’s fundraising included donations from more than 2,000 residents across the state and 97 percent of contributions were $100 or less, her campaign said.”
  • NEW MEXICO: “Ben Ray Luján, the House Democrat running for Senate in New Mexico, raised more than $1.1 million in the last quarter from more than 13,000 unique donors. Luján has sworn off corporate PAC contributions. Nearly 98% of the contributions were donations of $100 or less.”
  • SOUTH CAROLINA: “Democrat Jaime Harrison raised $1.5 million for his bid to challenge U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham in the past three months, his campaign announced Tuesday, breaking the record for the most ever raised by a Democratic Senate challenger in South Carolina… With 60,200 total contributions, including 57,100 this quarter, the average donation to Harrison has been $26, according to his campaign.”
  • Democratic Senate challengers in Colorado and Texas have also reported raising more than $1 million this quarter – putting vulnerable Republican incumbents on notice.
