DSCC Launches “Burr Bailout” Campaign

“‘It’s a candidate problem. You can’t fire the candidate.”

Richard Burr’s had a rough few months. Faced with lethargic fundraising, an out of touch record that prioritizes the special interests over North Carolina families, and poll numbers that have him now running in a tossup race with Deborah Ross, it’s no surprise that he is now drawing attention and millions of dollars from Washington outside groups terrified by his vulnerability. That’s why today, the DSCC launched the Burr Bailout campaign to highlight all of the ways Burr’s Washington special interests are trying to bailout Burr and his sinking campaign.

Burr has faced weeks of awful headlines, taking heat over his vote against the STOCK Act and fivefold increase in his net worth since coming to the Senate, his blatantly political retreat from his own Medicare bill after Ross criticized its harmful impact on seniors, and his campaign’s embarrassing use of stock footage in a television advertisement.

While Republicans long thought they’d never have to worry about Burr’s seat, in just the past week, the Koch brothers announced a desperate field effort in North Carolina and Karl Rove and Mitch McConnell’s dark money groups compiled a  more than $9 million rescue package for Burr, a telltale sign they know his seat is at risk.

“Richard Burr’s special interest backers know that Richard Burr is in trouble, so they are spending millions to help bail him out ,” said DSCC Communications Director Sadie Weiner. “But no amount of money can erase Burr’s long record of putting his own bank account and his big money backers before the people of North Carolina. North Carolinians are ready for a Senator who serves them instead of the special interests, and that’s why they’ll elect Deborah Ross this November.”

Burr’s bailout comes after even Republicans admit that Deborah Ross–who outraised Richard Burr the first two quarters of the year–has run a far superior campaign, running circles around him on the campaign trail and speaking to the issues that matter to working North Carolina families.

Unfortunately for Burr, he can get all the money in the world, but as one national Republican strategist told Politico: “‘It’s a candidate problem. You can’t fire the candidate.”
