DSCC Statement on Congresswoman Hartzler’s Refusal To Run Against Sen. McCaskill

Springfield News-Leader: “Hartzler’s decision represents another blow to Republicans.”

In response to Congresswoman Hartzler’s refusal to run against Senator McCaskill, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Spokesman David Bergstein released the following statement:

“Congresswoman Hartzler reached the same conclusion that other Republicans and voters across Missouri already know: nobody can out work Senator McCaskill and no one else would be a more effective champion for the state’s working families. It’s no surprise that Republican Senate candidates across the country are refusing to run under their party’s toxic health care plan that spikes costs and strips coverage for the middle class in order to give big insurance companies a break — the GOP brand is in tatters and their candidates have nothing to run on except a string of broken promises.”

From the Springfield New-Leader: “Rep. Vicky Hartzler has decided not to run for the Senate, taking another prominent Republican out of contention to challenge incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill…Hartzler’s decision represents another blow to Republicans, coming just weeks after the party’s top recruit for the race — St. Louis County GOP Rep. Ann Wagner — opted out of the race in a surprise announcement…several lesser-known Republican contenders have said they will vie for the GOP nomination.”

From the Springfield News-Leader: With no clear leader, lesser-known Republicans line up to defeat McCaskill. “When Rep. Paul Curtman said Thursday he was weighing a challenge to Sen. Claire McCaskill, he became the third Republican on the record running to stop the Missouri Democrat from winning a third term.”

From The St. Louis Post Dispatch: A year from the first votes, multiple Republicans weighing a McCaskill challenge. Thirteen months out from Missouri’s 2018 primaries, more than a half-dozen Republicans… are considering jumping into the race to unseat two-term Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.”
