In response to the passage of the Senate Republican tax bill, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Spokesman David Bergstein issued the following statement:
“This bill is nothing more than an in-kind donation to the large corporations and wealthy donors that fuel the Republican party, which is why it was sloppily thrown together behind closed doors and passed in the dead of night without an opportunity to review it. Senate Republican candidates will need to explain why the middle class should pay for corporate tax breaks while the cost of health insurance goes up, the deficit skyrockets, and Medicare is put on the chopping block. Republicans have shown voters where their priorities lie, and will hold them accountable in 2018.”
The Republican tax bill would force hardworking Americans who earn less than $75,000 a year to pay more in taxes while providing giveaways to the wealthy and large corporations, raise taxes on everything from medical expenses to student loans, gut Medicare by $25 billion, and explode the deficit. It was passed with full knowledge that corporations would use their additional savings to reward shareholders rather than increase jobs. That’s why groups like the AARP have come out against the bill and why a majority of voters oppose it.
Earlier this week, the DSCC released a new ad, “Mailbox,” that features individuals learning how the Republican proposal will increase their taxes in order to benefit the wealthy and well-connected.
