New Details on Republicans’ Tax Scam Show It Would Increase Taxes on Middle Class to Provide Even Steeper Benefits to the Wealthy
GOP Should Heed Their Own Words and Wait to Vote Until Senator-Elect Doug Jones is Seated
Today, Senate and House Republicans announced the final details of their sweeping tax scam, a bill that would significantly increase taxes on middle-class Americans while the wealthiest few get an even bigger tax cut, and repeal the individual mandate, which would increase health care premiums and cause millions to lose their insurance.
From Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Communications Director, Lauren Passalacqua: “What’s more stunning than last night’s results? That, in the wake of such a clear rebuke, President Trump and Republicans would double down on their tax scam that hurts the middle class. This bill is the least popular piece of legislation in decades and Republicans know it – that’s why they’re trying to jam it through Congress. There should not be a vote until Senator-elect Doug Jones is seated.”
Moody’s, a nonpartisan economic analysis, called the bill “a fiscal policy mistake,” with the “costs outweigh[ing] the benefits,” and the Joint Committee on Taxation found that it would cut taxes of the wealthy and increase taxes on families earning less than $75,000, while providing giveaways to the wealthy and large corporations. The New York Times also found the final bill would “likely undo [the] health insurance mandate,” a move that would further sabotage the market and increase health care premiums for Americans across the country.
DSCC Chairman Van Hollen appeared on MSNBC this morning to call on Majority Leader McConnell to seat Senator-Elect Jones immediately, allowing him to have a vote on the pressing issues of the day and represent the will of Alabama’s voters.
