DSCC Statement on West Virginia Primary Results

Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesman David Bergstein issued the following statement on the results of tonight’s West Virginia Republican Senate primary:

“Patrick Morrisey emerges tonight badly bruised from a bizarre primary contest that focused on personal political attacks instead of West Virginians. Now Morrisey will be forced to defend his lobbyist past and convince West Virginians that he isn’t beholden to special interests, despite taking hundreds of thousands of dollars from them. From supporting a plan that makes health care more expensive to putting Medicare and Social Security on the chopping block, West Virginians will have a lot to hold Morrisey accountable for.”

What The Damaging Primary Exposed About Patrick Morrisey:

  • Morrisey spent eight years as a Washington lobbyist “and the influence industry has fueled his campaign with hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions.” [Politico, 5/1/18]
    • Headline: “Lobbyists fuel lobbyist-turned-‘outsider’ Senate candidate.” [Politico, 5/1/18]
  • Morrisey supports the Republican health care plan that spikes premiums by 20 percent, strips coverage for pre-existing conditions and imposes an age tax on older Americans.
  • Morrisey was one of the principal authors of the GOP Medicare reform legislation passed in 2003. [Roll Call, 3/8/04]
    • CNN: 2003 Medicare reform took the “first step” towards allowing private plans to compete with Medicare. [CNN, 12/8/03]
  • Morrisey is from New Jersey and ran for Congress there in 2000. He was repeatedly attacked for his “New Jersey approach” in the West Virginia Republican Senate primary. [Fox News, 4/26/18]
