The Facts on How Senator Burr’s Made Washington Work For Him

burr

This morning’s devastating front-page story from McClatchy revealed the latest example of how Senator Richard Burr has made Washington work for him during his two decades in Congress. The report detailed how Burr’s major campaign donors sent him and his wife on “expense-paid trips” to Paris, Marseille, Barcelona and Seville.

The official reason for the vacations were “fact-finding” trips. We aren’t sure how many facts were found on Senator Burr’s trips, but we do have some facts of our own that show how Senator Burr has made Washington work for him.

THE FACTS:

  • The STOCK Act: Senator Burr was one of only three Senators to vote against the bill that banned insider trading for members of Congress. At the same time, Burr was pushing legislation that would benefit his own stock portfolio and the companies that fund his campaign. Since coming to the Senate, Burr’s net worth has increased more than 400%.

  • Using Campaign Funds to Enrich His Family: An investigation from McClatchy found that Burr’s political committees have paid almost $200,000 over the last 16 years to his in-laws and a firm employing his son.

  • His Medicare Plan to Benefit the Insurance Industry: Burr wrote his own Medicare plan that would make private insurers tens of billions of dollars while raising Medicare rates for North Carolina seniors by 9%, all while taking more than $1 million in campaign donations from the insurance industry.

“Senator Richard Burr’s twenty-plus years in Washington have been good for him, but terrible for the people of North Carolina,” said Lauren Passalacqua, DSCC National Press Secretary. “This newest bombshell news report further proves that Burr puts his own back account and big money backers ahead of North Carolinians, and that’s not the kind of Senator they deserve. Deborah Ross’s surging campaign reflects that North Carolina is ready for a Senator who puts them first.”
