GOP Senators’ Pence Passion Exposes Their Out-of-Touch Agenda

Vulnerable Republican Senators and Senate candidates who have tried to downplay their support of Donald Trump have shown no hesitation in fully embracing his Vice Presidential nominee Mike Pence. Somehow they think embracing the extremist who touted the dangers of mothers working outside the home and tried to start a state-run news service is acceptable.

Just take a look:

  • Roy Blunt called Pence a “great addition to the Republican ticket” and tweeted his support.
  • Mark Kirk had this to say before Pence was even selected: “I hope he gets the nod … I love Mike … we had a mutual admiration society.”
  • Marco Rubio says he thinks that Pence is “rock solid.”
  • John McCain supports Pence, saying, “everything I know about his service in the House was that he was well-regarded.”
  • Ron Johnson said Mike Pence had the “Washington experience, the legislative experience…I think he would be a good pick.”
  • Richard Burr called Pence “an excellent vice presidential candidate.”
  • Rob Portman is a fan of Pence as Trump’s pick.
  • Pat Toomey called Pence a “thoughtful, sensible conservative.”
  • John Boozman issued a statement sayingGovernor Pence is a good friend and former colleague. As a former Congressman and now Governor of the Hoosier State, Mike has a proven conservative track record. He has a broad range of executive and law-making experience, and I am confident he will be an asset to the ticket.”
  • Chuck Grassley heaped praise on Pence: “His personal demeanor is going to modify somewhat the erratic demeanor of Trump,” Grassley said in Des Moines.

But as Americans will see tonight when Pence gives his first address to the nation, the Republicans’ embrace of their vice presidential nominee is simply a confirmation of their shared out-of-touch agenda for women, LGBT Americans, immigrants, and hard working Americans:

“Mike Pence’s speech tonight will confirm that he is the perfect partner for Donald Trump—and that’s bad news for Republican Senators and candidates who have rushed to embrace his selection,” said DSCC spokesperson Sam Lau. “From his charge to defund vital women’s health services, to signing a deeply discriminatory bill against LGBT Hoosiers, to standing in the way of comprehensive immigration reform, Pence’s record proves that he would only reaffirm the dangerous Trump agenda that Senate Republicans have already promised to enact.  Make no mistake about it—Donald Trump, Mike Pence, and Senate Republicans are in lock step and on the wrong side of hard working American families.”
