No Going Back: As Trump Accepts Nomination, Republican Senators are #AllIn for #PartyofTrump

Tonight Donald Trump will accept the Republican Party’s nomination and address the nation as the GOP’s new standard bearer, officially completing the GOP’s transformation into the Party of Trump. Standing behind Trump tonight, whether they are in Cleveland or not, are the Republican Senators and candidates who have offered their support and–as Mitch McConnell confirmed this week–plan to enact his dangerous, out-of-touch agenda.

While the program this week has not gone, to put it nicely, according to plan, the bigger disaster from the stage has been the toxic, reckless policies that Senators from Rob Portman to Kelly Ayotte to Marco Rubio share with Donald Trump. There have been calls to defund vital women’s health services, support for corporate tax breaks, and fear mongering rhetoric in place of any plans for comprehensive immigration reform. Off stage, Republicans have remained silent while Trump proposed breaking our long-standing commitment to our NATO allies. And Republican leaders have made it crystal clear that their unprecedented obstructionism of Judge Merrick Garland has nothing to do with his qualifications, and everything to do with their desire to see Donald Trump reshape the Supreme Court in his image.

“After tonight, Senate Republicans no longer have room to obfuscate, dodge, or play rhetorical twister: Donald Trump is their nominee, and they are responsible and accountable for his toxic and hate-filled agenda,” said DSCC Communications Director Sadie Weiner. “When Donald Trump speaks tonight of his reckless plans for this country, voters should know that those are the plans Republican Senators have vowed to pass. If tonight he demeans women, immigrants, minorities, veterans, the disabled or any other group of Americans, voters should know Republican Senators and candidates did nothing to stand up to his earlier offenses. And when Donald Trump terrifyingly tells Americans he will be our next President, know that Republican Senators and candidates are planning to vote for him.

“No matter how far away they may be from Cleveland tonight, Republican Senate candidates have accepted their ticket to the Party of Trump.  Democrats are going to make sure it ends by November 8th.”
