Republican Senators Silent as Trump Receives First Classified Briefing

Today, a man who has encouraged Russian cyberattacks against the United States, repeatedly praised foreign dictators, would not commit to defending our NATO allies, suggested that more nations should obtain nuclear weapons, and whose top adviser has worked for Putin’s allies, will receive his first classified briefing from U.S. intelligence agencies.

Yet vulnerable Republicans Senators and Senate candidates aren’t expressing any type of opposition or even reservations about Donald Trump’s classified briefing. Instead, they are standing by Trump and continuing to support his presidential campaign in the hopes that Trump can handle receiving our country’s top secrets on a daily basis.

The GOP Senators’ continued support is even more galling given that many of them, including Kelly Ayotte and John McCain, won’t even say whether they trust Trump with the nuclear codes.

“Republican Senators were silent as Donald Trump’s reckless foreign policy agenda drove him to his party’s nomination, and now they are standing with him as he receives secret intelligence information he’s proven time and again he should be nowhere near,” said DSCC spokesperson Sam Lau. “Donald Trump’s grasp of national security is ignorant at best and dangerous at worst, but still Republicans are ready to hand him over the nuclear codes if it saves their own political careers.  Americans deserve to know: at what point, if any, do Republican Senators put their country before their party and stop trusting Trump with our nation’s security?”
