Garland sets record for longest any Supreme Court nominee has waited without action from Senate
126 days since Garland was nominated, Portman still refuses to do his job
With Republicans in Cleveland to rally around Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention, the DSCC will highlight that vulnerable Senators and Senate candidates are sharing the stage with Trump this whether or not they’ve decided to show up in Cleveland. That’s because they share many of the same dangerous policy positions that Trump promotes that would be devastating to America’s hard-working middle class families. Each day, we’ll spotlight an issue where GOP Senators and candidates stand with Trump.
As Donald Trump accepts the Republican presidential nomination in Cleveland this week, a reminder that Rob Portman stands with Trump on the unprecedented obstruction of President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland. After Justice Scalia’s death, Portman was quick to fall in line with Republicans’ decision to refuse to hold a hearing or a vote on any Supreme Court nominee, and doubled down on that obstructionism after Judge Garland was nominated.
Tonight’s RNC theme is “Make America First Again,” and Rob Portman has joined Senate Republicans in making Merrick Garland a first – as the Supreme Court nominee who has waited the longest for any type of action from the Senate. Not only has Portman shamefully refused to do his job for the past 126 days, but he’s holding the Supreme Court seat vacant so Trump can appoint the next Justice. That’s right, Portman wants the man who said women should be punished for having an abortion, wants to ban Muslims from entering the country and made racist comments about a federal judge to nominate someone for a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court.
“Rob Portman can’t avoid that he and Trump share many of the same damaging policy positions,” said DSCC Spokesperson Sam Lau. “Not only is Portman #AllIn for Trump, but he wants him to nominate the next Supreme Court Justice. Ohioans need to know that Portman stands with Trump, not with them.”
