Young “Philosophically Opposed” to Helping Laid Off Carrier Workers

Young voted against help for former Carrier employers to  find new work, while continuing to take Carrier donations

Congressman Todd Young’s votes against Indiana’s Carrier workers are back in the spotlight today with the US Department of Labor’s announcement that Carrier’s Indianapolis employees would be eligible for trade adjustment assistance benefits (TAA). These 1,400 Hoosiers who Carrier laid off in order to ship their jobs to Mexico will be able to benefit from the career and training services available through TAA, but that hasn’t stopped Congressman Young from voting against the TAA program. In fact, he said he was “philosophically” opposed to the program that will provide critical assistance to Hoosiers who lost their jobs.

But that’s not all. Young also continues to protect tax breaks for companies like Carrier that ship Hoosier jobs overseas, and he accepted donations from Carrier’s parent company even after they fired thousands of Hoosier employees.

“It’s shameful that Congressman Todd Young would vote against the trade adjustment assistance that will help thousands of Hoosiers who lost their jobs to Mexico, but it’s even worse that he continued to cash checks from the company responsible for the layoffs,” said DSCC Spokesperson Sam Lau. “Congressman Young continually puts his special interest backers ahead of Hoosiers, and that’s not the kind of Senator Indiana deserves. Evan Bayh will be a strong, independent voice in the Senate for hardworking Hoosier families.”
