Issues

Want to know where I stand on the issues? You won't find any information about my positions on my official Web site, in the newspapers, or at campaign rallies because I've been keeping a tight lid on that sort of thing. Thankfully, all the information you need about my radical right-wing positions has been helpfully compiled below.

President George W. Bush
I strongly support George W. Bush. Back in 2000, when Bush was coming under fire for speaking at Bob Jones University - an ultra-conservative school that used to ban interracial dating - I came to his defense and said that "If I were running for president, I would have gone there." In 2006, I showed my support for Bush by attending and speaking at a Bush rally. And to top it all off, when I was on the Colorado Board of Education, I proposed a resolution condemning a Denver-area teacher who criticized George Bush. When Bush says "jump" I ask "how high?"

Iraq
I supported President Bush's war in Iraq from day one - and I still do. I voted for the 2002 resolution that authorized the Iraq war and in 2004 I reaffirmed my support even as revelations regarding faulty pre-war intelligence became clear.

I'm such a strong believer in the Iraq war that I would have invaded Iraq even if 9/11 never happened. In 2005, I made my beliefs clear when I said, "No credible American leader who was sincere about containing an aggressive Saddam Hussein would have come to any other conclusion. Even without 9/11, I think it’s highly likely we would have seen a continuation of the (1991) Gulf War in Iraq during the current president’s term in office."

But that's not all. I think President Bush has done such a great job in Iraq that I'm hard pressed to find anything that's gone wrong. In 2005, I said that "My one and only regret is that so much emphasis was placed on the weapons of mass destruction."

Homeland Security and Crime
When it comes to keeping our country safe, there are a few things you might not know about me. After 9/11, I was one of only nine Representatives to vote against the Aviation Security Act, which, among other things, called for 100% inspection of checked bags, more law enforcement officers at U.S. airports and a federal takeover of air security. Security at our nation's airports just isn't that important to me.

That's just the tip of the iceberg though. In 1999, I voted against the Community Oriented Policing Services program (COPS) not once, but twice. And in 2001, I voted against funds for a program to fight drug trafficking in the most critical areas of the country.

Social Security
Your Social Security won't be in very good hands if you elect me to the US Senate. In both 1999 and 2004, I voiced my support for George Bush's risky scheme to privatize Social Security. I even voted to raid $830 billion from the Social Security Trust Fund in 2002 and, in 1998, I voted against putting budget surplus money into Social Security reserves.

Big Oil and the Environment
When it comes to choosing between massive oil companies and the environment - I'll take my buddies in big oil every time. In a 2007 speech at the Heritage Foundation, I declared, "I'm in the oil and gas business these days."

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the oil and gas industry was the #1 contributor to my 2000 re-election campaign. And to thank my buddies in Big Oil for all the support I voted to allow drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the Gulf of Mexico and even in the Great Lakes. Then after I left Congress, I went straight through the revolving door to Big Oil where I worked for oil and gas firm Aspect Energy.

So it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to find out that I'm no fan of the environment. The League of Conservation Voters gave me a 0% rating for my 2001-2002 voting record. In fact, I was the only Colorado Congressman to get a 0% that year. And, in 2001, I was one of only 15 members of Congress who voted against a measure to promote renewable and alternative energy. I even supported Colorado's Referendum A - a proposal that would have damaged the state's environment - despite overwhelming public opposition.

Stem Cell Research
I've also got some pretty radical views when it comes to stem cell research. Despite the life saving potential of stem cell research I've staunchly opposed the hugely popular measures to fund such research. I even went so as to compare embryonic stem cell research to the Nazi practice of using torture to conduct research. In my view, stem cell research is "something no civilized nation should condone, much less fund with tax dollars of conscientious, disapproving Americans."

Education
I've been a standard bearer for the radical right when it comes to education so it should come as no surprise that I support some astonishing education positions.

For starters, I'm a big supporter of vouchers even if they drain money from public schools. I led a pro-voucher group after leaving Congress and I even said that vouchers were "the No. 1 priority for Republicans."

In the 1990s, I co-founded a local charter school that refused to teach evolution. The school's official policy read "Discussions of evolutionary theory can lead to discussions of whether or not supernatural forces play a role in the mechanism of evolution or the origin of life. These topics extend beyond the scope of science and will not be taught at Liberty Common School."

In 1995, I supported firing teachers and said that a bill that would allow the firing of striking teachers was one of the most important pieces of legislation introduced in the general assembly that year. I also voted against legislation to shrink the size of classrooms twice in 1998. And, in 1999, I voted for a resolution to slash Head Start funding and deny 100,000 children access to the program.

More Issues
There are lots of other issues out there I've been doing my best to dodge so check back frequently for new updates from the DSCC. They'll let you know where I stand even when I won't!
