First poll of the Iowa general election shows race tied as voters blame Hinson & Republicans for high gas prices, Iran war
Last week, multiple race raters changed Iowa’s rating in Democrats’ favor
Today, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) released a new poll conducted by Public Policy Polling showing two-time Paralympic gold medalist Josh Turek starts the general election tied with Congresswoman Ashley Hinson at 46-46. Turek holds a strong lead with Independent voters and enjoys more enthusiasm within his own party. Iowans blame Trump and Republicans for higher prices, with Trump’s approval rate falling to -9 and voters opposing the Iran war by 24 points.
The poll comes after Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball changed Iowa’s rating in Democrats’ favor.
DSCC spokesperson Maeve Coyle released the following statement:
“The Iowa Senate seat is firmly in play: Iowans are fired up about two-time Paralympian Josh Turek — and they’re rejecting Ashley Hinson, who is underwater as voters reject her toxic record and support for a war that’s spiking prices. Democrats have created a path to a Senate majority with strong candidates, a winning message, and formidable campaigns, and we are in a strong position to win the majority and flip the Senate.”
The poll was conducted from June 3-4, 2026. Key findings from the poll include:
- Turek enjoys a net favorability of +4, nine points better than Hinson at -5.
- Turek leads with Independents, enjoying a +7 net favorability among Independents, while Hinson has a -19 net favorability with them.
- Republicans face major headwinds in Iowa as Trump’s approval rating falls to -9.
- By a 20-point margin, voters agree that reckless tariffs and the war with Iran are causing higher prices that are crushing Iowa families.
- Voters oppose the Iran war by 24 points and blame Trump and Republicans for higher gas prices by that same margin.
