As Republicans launch a full-scale rescue mission to bail out out-of-touch GOP Senate candidate Cindy Hyde-Smith, over the weekend she doubled down on her infamous claim that Mississippians have “so many proteins to choose from” – even as beef prices continue to skyrocket thanks to her toxic, price-spiking agenda and votes to rubber stamp the reckless tariffs.
Her latest comment comes just before Trump traveled to Corinth, Mississippi, and national Republicans pour their remaining resources into propping up floundering, unpopular candidates like Hyde-Smith — who has voted multiple times in favor of continuing the war in Iran, ripped health insurance away from 145,000 Mississippians, and spiked health care costs for 320,000 more.

WLOX’s HUGH KEETON: The last time you were here, I asked you a question about beef prices, and since that time your opponent has used part of your quote in there in ads that have been widely circulated. You said that there was other proteins to choose from […] so I’m going to rephrase the question here.
You have an extensive background in agriculture and food processing; what can be done in the Senate at the federal level to bring down some of our food prices? Because food prices continue to go high – we all eat, and it’s tough.
MS GOP Sen. CINDY HYDE-SMITH: Well, the comparison there is the two things that I hear the most about throughout Mississippi is gas prices and food prices. Gas is one item – both of you had gas in your car to come to work today. You can’t get the water hose and fill up that tank; you can’t get peanut oil and fill up that tank. Gasoline, unless you want to ride the bicycle; that’s your only option.
The other is the food prices and the increase there, but thank goodness, when mothers want to feed their families, you go out shopping, there are proteins – you wanna feed meat – there are some cheaper prices, and, uh, that’s what that statement was about. Because there’s nothing to replace that gasoline, unless you wanna ride a bicycle.
