While testifying before the House Oversight and Reform Committee today, Postmaster General and GOP mega-donor Louis DeJoy admitted he won’t restore the nearly 700 high-speed mail sorting machines that he’s removed from postal facilities across the country, threatening the USPS’s ability to process mail-in ballots ahead of the election and amid widespread delays in delivery of critical mail like prescriptions and Social Security benefits.
Meanwhile, Senate Republicans are on day 11 of their summer vacation amid a public health and economic crisis and are refusing to return to work to vote on the House-passed bipartisan legislation to provide urgently needed funding for the Postal Service and reverse policies that hamper delivery — which includes restoring the high-speed mail sorting machines DeJoy removed to ensure the USPS can handle the influx of mail-in ballots and restore on-time delivery of important mail to Americans across the country.
“Senate Republicans are just as responsible for the Postal Service sabotage and delays because they refuse to take any action to correct it,” said DSCC spokesperson Helen Kalla. “Vacation time is over — Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans need to get back to work and vote on the bipartisan bill to provide the USPS with the resources it needs and reverse DeJoy’s reckless and harmful cuts to our Postal Service.”
