Democrats Condemn Texas’ Six-Week Abortion Ban & Call Out Republicans’ Toxic Reproductive Health Care Agenda

Roll Call: Democrats say Texas abortion ban spotlights Senate battle in 2022

In response to Texas’ six-week abortion ban going into effect, Democrats in key battleground states are calling out Republicans’ toxic agenda on reproductive health care and ongoing efforts to try and strip away health care coverage from women and families — and highlighting the critical role this issue will play in the 2022 Senate elections.

See for yourself:

  • MSNBC: Texas abortion ban reverberates from White House to state houses. “The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is already emphasizing that reproductive rights will be central to the party’s 2022 messaging…Democratic state parties in states like New Hampshire and Florida — both of which will be home to key Senate contests next year — are pushing similar messages.”
  • From the DSCC

“This attack on women’s health care is a powerful reminder of the stakes in next year’s election — and why we must defend a Democratic Senate majority with the power to confirm or reject Supreme Court justices. The freedom for women to make our own health care decisions is on the ballot in 2022, and the contrast between the parties on this issue is crystal clear: while Senate Democrats are committed to protecting and expanding access to affordable health care for women and families, Republicans have shown they’ll use every tool they can, from the courts to Congress, to try and strip away health care coverage from women and families.
  • In Arizona, Senator Mark Kelly highlighted his commitment to protecting reproductive health care:

@CaptMarkKelly: Uncompromising politicians in Texas have threatened abortion rights for everyone — and SCOTUS’s decision last night makes clear how much is at stake in this fight for reproductive care. So, let me be clear: I will always defend these rights as Arizona’s Senator.
  • In Colorado, the Colorado Democrats called out GOP Senate candidates for refusing to protect reproductive freedom for Coloradans.
  • In Florida, the Florida Democratic Party criticized Marco Rubio for his long history of extreme and dangerous anti-reproductive rights views and efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade:

“During his time in the Senate Marco Rubio has made it his mission to support anti-choice judges who have allowed this dangerous and unconstitutional ban to go into effect. If we don’t defeat Marco Rubio, Floridians’ access to safe and legal reproductive health care, which is already in peril, will be taken away completely.”
  • In Georgia, Senator Reverend Warnock reminded voters of the importance of keeping a Democratic Senate majority in order to protect and expand access to affordable reproductive care:

@reverendwarnock: The extreme abortion law in Texas is exactly why we need to keep a Senate with the power to appoint Supreme Court justices that respect a woman’s right to choose.
  • In Nevada, Nevada Democratic Victory slammed GOP candidate Adam Laxalt for his extremist, anti-abortion views and efforts to undermine reproductive rights in Nevada:

“This attack on women’s health care is a powerful reminder to Nevada women of the stakes in next year’s election and why we must defeat anti-abortion extremist Adam Laxalt. Laxalt has dedicated his career to the anti-choice movement, using his position as Attorney General to undermine reproductive rights and even opening the door to overturning the law protecting abortion access in Nevada. Adam Laxalt won’t stand up for the rights of Nevada women.”

And Senator Cortez Masto emphasized her commitment to defending reproductive freedom:

@CatherineForNV: The Supreme Court’s failure to intervene in the Texas abortion ban is appalling and sets a dangerous precedent for reproductive rights. I will never stop defending access to abortion.
  • In New Hampshire, the New Hampshire Democratic Party condemned Chris Sununu for implementing an extreme abortion ban in New Hampshire:

“We must elect Democrats to the State House who will fight for the rights of Granite Staters to make their own health care choices after Chris Sununu and the New Hampshire Republican Party passed a cruel and extreme abortion ban that includes felony penalties against doctors who deliver these services. This year, we must re-elect Senator Hassan, Congresswoman Kuster, and Congressman Pappas, who will fight for the rights of Granite Staters in Washington as Mitch McConnell and Washington Republican legislators try to end reproductive rights at the federal level. And we must hold every single Republican politician who has tried to rip away health care coverage for New Hampshire women and families accountable— from Chris Sununu to Chuck Morse to Sherman Packard.

And Senator Hassan vowed to fight back to protect Granite Staters’ reproductive rights:

@maggie_hassan: The Supreme Court essentially gutted Roe v. Wade by allowing Texas’s abortion ban to take effect. As access to reproductive health care is stripped away across the country, we must fight back to protect reproductive rights.
  • In North Carolina, the North Carolina Democratic Party called out every single GOP Senate candidate for being out of step with North Carolina voters with their anti-choice records:

“The extreme, partisan attack on reproductive health in Texas proves exactly what’s at stake in North Carolina’s U.S. Senate race. The GOP field has made it clear that when it comes to protecting and expanding reproductive care, they will do everything they can to strip away our rights. In 2022, we will stand up against Republicans’ anti-choice agenda that is out of step with North Carolina’s values.”
