DSCC QUICK TAKES: GOP TRIES TO GUT EMERGENCY UNEMPLOYMENT WITH MILLIONS OUT OF WORK—JAMES TALKS TOUGH ON CHINA BUT BENEFITS FROM “AMICABLE RELATIONS”

“THE DUMBEST IDEA EVER”: REPUBLICANS PROPOSE GUTTING EMERGENCY UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF EVEN AS MILLIONS REMAIN OUT OF WORK. After weeks of wasting time bickering, Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans let emergency unemployment benefits expire as jobless claims rose again this week.  Now millions of Americans are about to lose support that has helped keep them afloat during this crisis, and Republicans’ lapse on emergency unemployment relief is threatening to “rattle the entire economy.” The GOP proposal that would gut these essential benefits and leave cash-strapped state and local governments hanging with no new aid as they face “fiscal crisis” is so complicated that it “would take months for some states to implement” and even Republicans have “little confidence” in it. In fact, the Republican labor commissioner from Georgia called the Senate Republicans’ proposal “the dumbest idea ever.”

ON TRUMP ELECTION DELAY TWEET, REPUBLICANS DODGE. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell “clearly heard” the question but “did not respond in any way” while Senator Joni Ernst told reporters she was “not answering any questions.” The low bar isn’t asserting that the election should happen – as Senators Martha McSally and Lindsey Graham tried to get away with this morning – it’s telling the president he is wrong and ensuring states and local governments have the funding they need to administer fair elections in a pandemic, which includes expanding vote by mail. The Republican coronavirus “plan” does not include additional election funding.

FAILED POLITICIAN JOHN JAMES “TALKS TOUGH ON CHINA” WHILE DOING BUSINESS.  A new Daily Beast report reveals that while failed politician John James publicly uses anti-China rhetoric, he doesn’t tell Michiganders that his family firm has “benefitted from a lucrative business relationship between one of its largest clients and a state-controlled Chinese automaker.” The hypocrisy is the latest example of desperate Republicans using the NRSC playbook to “attack China” in an attempt to try and shift blame from Trump’s bungled coronavirus response. SENATOR SUSAN COLLINS SHOULD BE “CONCERNED” ABOUT RE-ELECTION. MSNBC’s Chris Hayes spoke with journalist Rebecca Traister about why Senator Susan Collins should be concerned about her re-election prospects, from her tanking approval ratings, new polling showing her trailing Sara Gideon, and her refusal to stand up to President Trump. Senator Collins is facing her most difficult re-election campaign ever, which is rated as a Toss-Up by every major nonpartisan elections analyst for the first time in her political career.

WHAT COLLINS ISN’T TELLING YOU: KAVANAUGH TRIED TO AVOID TAKING UP AN ABORTION CASE. An exclusive new CNN report reveals that Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh urged his colleagues “to consider avoiding decisions in major disputes over abortion” this spring, which would have ensured he would not “have to put [his] own views on the line.” Senator Collins justified her vote for Justice Brett Kavanaugh by promising Mainers he would respect precedent with regard to Roe v. Wade and reproductive rights. But despite these attempts to sidestep his anti choice views, Kavanaugh ignored precedent and wrote an anti-choice dissent on the Court, sparking renewed criticism of Collins from Mainers for her vote to confirm the anti-choice justice.

TUBERVILLE DEFIES HEALTH ORDERS ON DC TRIP FOR CAMPAIGN CASH. Alabama Senate candidate Tommy Tuberville is in Washington, D.C. this week for a fundraising trip where he’ll be holding in-person meetings and defying public health rules. A photo of Tuberville not wearing a mask in a “cramped room with close to 25 people seated shoulder-to-shoulder” was posted on Tuberville’s Facebook page on Tuesday before he arrived in D.C. Alabama is a coronavirus hot spot, and the D.C. government has ordered nonessential visitors to self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. Just like when he opposed the Republican governor’s mask order in his state, Tuberville is flouting public health guidelines and seems more focused on raising campaign cash in Washington than keeping people safe.
