DSCC spokesperson Helen Kalla released the following statement on the results of the Republican primary for Kansas’ U.S. Senate race:
“Republicans are now stuck with having to prop up an underwhelming candidate they didn’t want in Washington politician Roger Marshall, a weak fundraiser with a shady past who’s failed to inspire enthusiasm or run a credible campaign. Congressman Marshall would be nothing more than a rubber stamp for Mitch McConnell’s agenda of gutting access to health care and ripping away protections for Kansans with pre-existing conditions, and he can’t be counted on to put Kansas first.
“After an expensive and bruising primary, Marshall will face a formidable opponent in Dr. Barbara Bollier, who has been building a strong grassroots campaign, a broad coalition of support, and a massive resource advantage for the general election. Dr. Bollier is a problem solver focused on the issues Kansans care about most like access to affordable health care, and she’s proven that she’s the best candidate to represent Kansans in the U.S. Senate.”
Dr. Bollier has raised a total of $9 million so far this cycle and has $4.5 million cash on hand going into the general election — while Marshall has “been unable to raise the type of money needed for a credible statewide race.” The most recent public poll showed Bollier and Marshall neck-and-neck.
