Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, issued the following statement on MJ Hegar’s strong first-place finish and the upcoming runoff in the Texas Senate primary:
“MJ Hegar’s impressive performance is proof of the strength of her campaign and underscores that she is in the best position to flip this seat in November. As a decorated combat veteran and a working mother, MJ understands the challenges facing hardworking families across Texas, and she has what it takes to fight for more affordable health care and prescription drugs, protections for people with pre-existing conditions, access to good-paying jobs, and action to address climate change. MJ has traveled tens of thousands of miles to meet with Texans across the state, and she will only continue to build momentum and support in this critical race.”
MJ Hegar has led the Democratic field in organization and grassroots fundraising, bringing in almost $4 million to date from more than 35,000 contributors and securing donations from three-fourths of Texas counties. MJ has consistently held Senator Cornyn accountable for his harmful policy positions — voting to take away pre-existing conditions protections for Texans, blocking meaningful prescription drug reform and standing in the way of bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform.
