After reversing their monthslong opposition to more direct relief for Georgians, the question was whether Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue would actually demand a vote on the bipartisan plan for $2,000 relief checks approved by the House. With Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocking a vote for a second day in a row and refusing to take up the bill, Georgians have their answer: Loeffler and Perdue do not support a vote on $2,000 checks.
“Two of the wealthiest Senators in Washington can’t be bothered to demand a vote on a bill that will provide more relief to Georgians,” said DSCC spokesperson Helen Kalla. “Their self-serving empty gestures are a stark contrast to the swift action both took to dump millions of dollars in personal stock after a private coronavirus briefing. Six days out from the election, and it’s never been clearer: Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue are only looking out for themselves.”
Loeffler and Perdue spent yesterday dodging questions and declining to say “whether they asked McConnell to allow an up-or-down vote” or “if they would leave the campaign trail and return to the Senate floor in Washington to vote if the proposal is considered this week.” Both GOP senators repeatedly stood against direct individual relief for the past year and only reversed their opposition to increased stimulus checks after sustained public pressure from Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock and months of “getting hammered” on the campaign trail.
