MCCONNELL: “Unacceptable” Republican Senate Candidates Are Problem For The GOP

A wave of news coverage is highlighting how Mitch McConnell acknowledged “unacceptable” Republican Senate candidates are a problem for the GOP and that “you can’t nominate somebody who’s just sort of unacceptable to a broader group of people and win.”

Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesperson Nora Keefe: “Even a broken clock is right twice a day – and even Mitch McConnell knows that Republicans’ deeply flawed Senate candidates will be rejected by voters in November.”

MSNBC: McConnell is right to worry about ‘bizarre’ GOP Senate candidates

  • What McConnell neglected to mention, however, is that some of his party’s likely nominees this year might also be described as “bizarre.”
  • In Arizona, for example, there’s a sizable GOP primary field filled with candidates who don’t appear to have any interest in appealing to the American mainstream.
  • In Colorado, the party is rallying behind a Senate candidate who’s not only peddled strange election conspiracy theories, he’s released an ad in which the Republican is seen literally blowing up a fake Dominion Voting machine.
  • In Georgia, the GOP frontrunner appears to have some rather serious issues.
  • There are also crowded primaries in Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania… in which the Senate nomination is likely to go to candidates who are very far to the right.
  • If McConnell is optimistic that his party won’t repeat its mistakes, and “unacceptable” nominees are a thing of the past, he might soon be disappointed.

Washington Post (Opinion): After appealing to con men, the GOP now complains about the hucksters

  • Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) warned Republicans on Tuesday… “you can’t nominate somebody who’s just sort of unacceptable to a broader group of people and win. We had that experience in 2010 and 2012.”
  • Which flaky candidate might he have in mind? Perhaps he is thinking of Mehmet Oz, the TV doctor infamous for hawking substances of little or no proved medical efficacy.
  • Or perhaps McConnell might have been referring to Herschel Walker, the Republican running for Georgia’s Senate seat whom McConnell himself has endorsed.
  • The Daily Beast reports: “The Republican Senate hopeful and longtime friend of Donald Trump has, for whatever reason, chosen to dramatically inflate his business record . . . In doing so, Walker has established a parallel record of demonstrably false claims, many of which appear to bear no resemblance to reality whatsoever.” The Daily Beast’s investigation found that at least one of the businesses Walker has claimed credit for doesn‘t exist.
  • Gosh, is it just bad luck that the GOP keeps finding such candidates? Or is there something more fundamental about the party that attracts liars, hucksters, accused abusers and shameless con men?

The Hill: McConnell: ‘Actually possible’ for GOP to screw up midterms with ‘unacceptable’ candidates

  • Republicans… face several messy primaries that could have ramifications for the general election map and the GOP’s chances of picking up, or holding on to, a seat.
  • Former President Trump over the weekend irked some allies when he endorsed Mehmet Oz in the Pennsylvania Senate race. There’s also been running high-profile tension in the North Carolina GOP primary, where Trump has endorsed Rep. Ted Budd.
  • Republicans in previous cycles have watched GOP nominees win the party’s primary only to lose the Senate seat in the general election.

Business Insider: Mitch McConnell said that the GOP may screw up the midterms if it lets ‘unacceptable’ candidates get fielded in critical Senate races

  • “You can’t nominate somebody who’s just sort of unacceptable to a broader group of people and win,” he said.
