Momentum in South Carolina as Harrison Gains Ground & “Raises Record $2.1M”

Harrison raises record-breaking $2.1 million as new polling shows single-digit race, Graham underwater

Post & Courier: “The figure represents the most ever raised in a single quarter by a Democratic U.S. Senate challenger in South Carolina”

In case you missed it, U.S. Senate candidate Jaime Harrison announced this week that he raised more than $2 million in the third quarter of 2019, breaking his own fundraising record to bring in “the most ever raised in a single quarter by a Democratic U.S. Senate challenger in South Carolina.” Jaime’s historic fundraising — powered by a “small-dollar army” with an average contribution of $24 — comes as he continues to build momentum in the race to take on unpopular incumbent Senator Lindsey Graham. A new poll this week shows Jaime narrowing the race to single-digits, while Graham is underwater with South Carolina voters.

Charleston Post & Courier: SC Democrat Jaime Harrison raises record $2.1M in bid for Lindsey Graham’s US Senate seat

  • Democrat Jaime Harrison raised $2.1 million for his bid to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham over the past three months, his campaign told The Post and Courier on Wednesday, bringing his total cash on hand to over $2.6 million more than a year away from the election.
  • The figure represents the most ever raised in a single quarter by a Democratic U.S. Senate challenger in South Carolina, breaking the record Harrison set himself with his $1.5 million haul last quarter.
  • “Our campaign is growing and powered by grassroots supporters across South Carolina and the nation,” Harrison said. “I am fighting to ensure that every South Carolinian has access to affordable health care, good paying jobs and student loan debt relief.”
  • About 47,000 people gave a total of 85,000 contributions to Harrison for an average of approximately $24 per contribution, according to his campaign.
  • Hundreds of supporters turned out for Harrison’s kickoff rally this past Sunday in his native Orangeburg, including 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Cory Booker and House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, an influential Columbia Democrat who used to be Harrison’s boss.
  • Harrison’s campaign has also been buoyed by a recent poll funded by a Democratic group that supports black candidates, which found him to be just 7 percent behind Graham.

The State: National group polls in South Carolina to prove a Democrat can beat Lindsey Graham

  • According to a poll Collective PAC commissioned from Change Research and obtained first by The State, Harrison trails Graham by just 7 percentage points — a surprisingly slim margin…
  • Upon reading a biography and mission statement for each candidate… those same voters picked Graham over Harrison at just a 2 percentage point spread, 49-47.
  • The poll’s findings could build more momentum for Harrison’s campaign at a time when Graham has perhaps never been more polarizing…
  • The former leader of the state Democratic Party and current associate chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Harrison is being perceived as the most viable Democrat in years to run for a U.S. Senate seat in South Carolina.
  • Scott Huffmon, a political science professor at Winthrop University who manages the institute’s political public opinion survey of South Carolinians, noted that… this new poll “definitely shows more enthusiasm for a Democratic candidate for Senate than at any other time.”
