Nearly 41 Million Unemployed, Millions Losing Health Care & 100,000 Dead, But McConnell & Republicans “Have No Plan,” See No “Urgency” To Act

DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss issued the following statement:

“Nearly 41 million Americans have now filed for unemployment, millions of Americans have also lost their employer-provided health care, and over 100,000 Americans have died, but Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans see no ‘urgency’ to act on desperately needed relief and have no plan to help the millions of Americans who are newly unemployed and uninsured. In the middle of a devastating public health and economic crisis, Senate Republicans are choosing not to act — and they will own this disastrously inadequate response in November.”

As nearly 41 million Americans have filed for unemployment in recent months, and millions have also lost their health insurance during this public health crisis, a new report from HuffPost spotlighted how Senate Republicans “still see no need to act on health care” and aren’t interested in “pursuing additional emergency relief for those who suddenly find themselves uninsured.”

Senate Republicans have responded to a global health and economic crisis by making it harder for out-of-work Americans to get health care by refusing to demand the Trump administration open a special enrollment period for health coverage, moving forward with their lawsuit to tear down the entire health care law that provides protections for pre-existing conditions and expanded Medicaid, and steadfastly supporting President Trump’s dangerously insufficient pandemic response. The NRSC has even said Senate Republicans are working “hand in glove” with the White House.

Despite the fact that millions of Americans have lost their jobs and their employer-sponsored health coverage, McConnell and vulnerable Senate Republicans do not feel the “urgency of acting immediately” and would rather praise the president than demand accountability from the White House.
