As first-time unemployment claims climbed to nearly 1 million last week, Republicans in Washington have continued to mismanage the response to the coronavirus pandemic and failed to provide the financial relief Americans need to get through this crisis.
The U.S. hit yet another one-day record high with more than 4,300 coronavirus deaths yesterday while new reporting showed the Trump administration may have “sow[n] more chaos” in the rollout and distribution of vaccines. As COVID-19 has escalated our economic challenges, Republicans in the Senate have been making those financial problems worse for hardworking Americans for months by fighting to slash emergency unemployment insurance benefits, refusing to pass $2,000 direct relief checks, and blocking urgent funding to state and local governments.
DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss issued the following statement on the rise in unemployment claims as the spread of coronavirus continues to worsen across the country:
“After nearly a year of Senate Republicans mismanaging the response to this public health crisis and opposing vital economic relief our country needs, the fallout continues to worsen for countless families who are struggling, out of work and need more help. While Mitch McConnell and his caucus have devoted their energy to fighting to gut emergency unemployment insurance and blocking adequate direct relief checks, hardworking Americans are more ready than ever for new leadership in Washington.”
