The DSCC today recognized vulnerable Republican Senator Rob Portman for his calculated political decision to return campaign donations from a noted white supremacist – only after recognizing the potential for political consequences following public outcry over the source of the donations.
Senator Portman welcomed donations from Earl Holt III, a self-described “slumlord” and President of the Council of Conservative Citizens. Holt has deep ties to the extremist group, which the Southern Poverty Law Center labeled a “white nationalist” hate group.
“Rob Portman’s calculated political decision to return donations from a white supremacist only after realizing the political consequences demonstrates just how badly he feels his reelection is going,” said Sadie Weiner, DSCC National Press Secretary. “Rob Portman is already running the most negative campaign in the country despite the election being 14 months away and now we know he’s willing to take money from just about anyone in order to stay in office.”
