Ron Johnson Votes To Allow Discrimination Against LGBT Youth

Ron Johnson Voted Against Amendment To Protect LGBT Homeless And Runaway Youth From Discrimination

As the Senate considered amendments today on the anti-human trafficking bill, Senator Ron Johnson callously voted to allow homeless and runaway youth who identify as LGBT to be discriminated against. The amendment would improve and reauthorize programs in local communities for grant money, residential services, education and crisis intervention for homeless and runaway youth, and it would prohibit any recipients from discriminating against any youth in need based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Roughly 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBT.

“It is unbelievable that Ron Johnson voted to allow discrimination against young people who are simply seeking safe haven in a time of great need and vulnerability,” said Sadie Weiner, DSCC National Press Secretary. “These young people need to know that their elected officials are looking out for their safety and best interests, especially when they feel that no one else is, and it’s appalling to know that Ron Johnson is unwilling to stand up to protect these children when they need it most.”
