WATCH: MSNBC Spotlights Ayotte, Portman, & Johnson’s Votes Against Closing Loophole Allowing Suspected Terrorists to Buy Guns

As Rachel Maddow pointed out last night, despite the fact that a majority of Americans—including a majority of gun owners–support closing the loophole that allows suspected terrorists to purchase guns, Senators Kelly Ayotte, Rob Portman, and Ron Johnson all voted against commonsense legislation to do just that last December. Following the tragic attacks in Orlando, will they be able to see past their partisan obstructionism and support measures that keep guns out of the hands of suspected terrorists?

“After the San Bernardino attacks last year, you might remember, Democrats in Congress tried to pass legislation which would have made it illegal for anybody on a terrorist watch list to buy a gun. This happens to be a wildly popular idea among the American people, including among American gun owners, that people on the terrorist watchlist shouldn’t be allowed to buy guns.

Most people think that if you’re, say, on the no fly list, you shouldn’t be able to go buy an AR-15 or Sig Sauer MCX or even a handgun. But Republicans in Congress were having none of it, even right after San Bernardino, they – Republicans in Congress, they want people on the terrorist watchlist to continue to be able to buy guns. Even vulnerable Republicans up for reelection in not particularly red states, Republicans like Kelly Ayotte in New Hampshire, and Rob Portman in Ohio, and Ron Johnson in Wisconsin, they all voted that people on terrorist watchlists should be able to buy guns.”
