What McConnell Really Thinks About Walker: “Deep Concerns.” “Complicated Personal History Is A Vulnerability.”

Following months of deep concern about Herschel Walker’s candidacy and desperate pleas for additional candidates to enter the race, Mitch McConnell is now bowing to Trump’s hand picked choice –– a “sign of Trump’s continued hold over the party.”

But here’s what McConnell really thinks about Walker:

• In July, a bombshell Associated Press report detailing Walker’s checkered past and questionable business dealings, including inflating his business record and facing several lawsuits over questionable dealings, was attributed to Republicans who had  concerns about Walker––with Trump loyalist Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene calling the story an “organized opposition research leak” by Mitch McConnell to “dirty up” Walker.

• Following the AP report, POLITICO detailed how “McConnell views Walker’s complicated personal history as a vulnerability” and that McConnell-aligned operatives were tweeting the story, writing: “This is about as comprehensive a takedown as I’ve ever read. My lord.”

• Then one Senate Republican anonymously told POLITICO that “McConnell thinks that there are a lot of people out there that fundamentally don’t want the president just choosing this person.”

• In August, CNN reported that McConnell “has privately expressed his deep concerns with Walker’s potential candidacy” and was actively recruiting other candidates to run in the messy primary.

• Even after Walker officially entered the race, McConnell and his allies were still “privately express[ing] concerns about whether Walker is ready for the intense pressure of a campaign.” 

“McConnell spent months hitting the panic button over Herschel Walker’s candidacy. Now this sudden reversal happened because McConnell knows Walker will be a rubber stamp for his agenda in the Senate: raising taxes on middle class families, taking away health care from Georgians with pre-existing conditions, and opposing coronavirus relief for families and small businesses,” said DSCC spokesperson Amanda Sherman-Baity. “Unfortunately for Walker, Georgia voters have already rejected Mitch McConnell and the GOP’s wildly toxic agenda once before and will do so again in 2022.”
