What To Know About Marco Rubio

Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesperson Amanda Sherman-Baity released the following statement on Sen. Marco Rubio:

“Marco Rubio has shown he’s a spineless, self-serving politician who isn’t tough enough to stand up for Florida’s working families in Washington. He has one of the worst attendance records in the Senate  – and when he bothers to show up for work he votes against commonsense, bipartisan solutions to lower costs, invest in his state’s infrastructure, and protect Floridians’ freedoms. Rubio represents everything Floridians hate about Washington, and that’s why he’ll be voted out of office in November.”

What to know about Marco Rubio:

Rubio is a no-show senator with one of the worst attendance records in the Senate.

  • PolitiFact: Overall, Rubio missed more than 9% of votes since 2011 — well above the average of 2.3% among members of the Senate.
  • Florida Phoenix: ‘Absences grab voters’ attention’: Rep. Demings criticizes Sen. Rubio’s missed votes in Congress

On the issues that matter, Rubio is out of step with Florida’s working families. Rubio has voted against legislation that would invest in and improve Florida’s infrastructure, lower the cost of prescription drugs for Floridians and address supply chain issues while holding China accountable. Following the Supreme Court overturning abortion rights, Rubio reiterated his support for making abortion illegal without exceptions for rape or incest.

  • The Tampa Bay Times Editorial Board wrote that Rubio “failed to promote the economic interests of the Sunshine State” when he voted against the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
  • MSNBC: Marco Rubio rejects bipartisan compromises (over and over again)
  • Business Insider: Sen. Marco Rubio supported banning almost all abortions in a newly uncovered 2010 questionnaire
  • CNN: Marco Rubio says he opposes abortions in all instances
  • PolitiFact: “We found that Rubio supported legislation that would put abortion doctors in prison”

Florida newspapers and editorial boards have slammed Rubio, writing that he “lacks a spine” and that it’s “time to give up” on the senator who “will never do the right thing.”

  • Miami Herald Editorial Board: “It’s hard to take a principled stand when one lacks a spine, as Florida’s U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio has shown us.”
  • Sun Sentinel Editorial Board: “Rubio is up for re-election this year. But the more he opens his mouth, the less he appears to deserve six more years.”
