Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesperson Stewart Boss released the following statement in response to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s announcement today that he will appoint political mega-donor Kelly Loeffler to the U.S. Senate:
“The appointment of a political mega-donor is exactly what Georgians hate about Washington, and now that she’s bought her temporary seat, Kelly Loeffler has already pledged to walk lockstep with party bosses instead of putting what’s right for Georgia first. Voters will reject this type of corruption at the ballot box in 2020.”
Kemp’s decision to appoint a major political “mega-donor” has ignited a firestorm from local activists who have wasted no time in slamming Kelly Loeffler as “unacceptable,” “the wrong choice,” and “disqualified.” Loeffler is best known for giving millions to politicians — including thousands of dollars in campaign cash to Kemp and her party.
The special election for this Georgia Senate seat is expanding the battle for the Senate, putting Republicans even further on defense on the 2020 map and offering Democrats another key opportunity for a pickup in an increasingly competitive battleground state. Donald Trump carried Georgia by just 5 points in 2016 and his net approval in the state since taking office has plunged by 21 points. In 2018, Democrats earned more votes than at any point in recent history and made historic gains up and down the ballot.
