DSCC Statement on Republicans Starting Senate Impeachment Trial With No Commitment to Hearing Key Witnesses and Critical Evidence

DSCC Communications Director Lauren Passalacqua issued the following statement:

“Every single Senator has a responsibility to uphold their oath of office by reviewing all of the evidence and committing to an impartial process that gets to the truth, but Republicans start this trial with no commitment to hearing from key witnesses or including critical new evidence. A trial that excludes relevant documents and blocks testimony from witnesses with firsthand knowledge of the president’s abuse of power is a partisan cover-up, not a thorough hearing of the facts. It’s time for Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans to stop putting party politics first and carry out their Constitutional duty by committing to a fair trial.”

Here’s the latest on the impeachment process and how Senate Republicans are handling their role as jurors:

  • Axios: Federal watchdog finds OMB violated law by withholding Ukraine aid
  • AZ – CNN: “Sen. Martha McSally (R-AZ) called CNN’s Manu Raju a ‘liberal hack’ when asked about considering new evidence for President Trump’s impeachment trial in the Senate.”
  • CO – Denver Post: “Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado isn’t saying whether he is part of a small group of Republican senators considering allowing witnesses as impeachment charges against President Donald Trump prepare to move to Congress’ upper chamber.”
  • NC – Fox News: Sen. Tillis says calling witnesses is a ‘slippery slope’ in a Senate impeachment trial
