ICYMI: DSCC Launches Digital Ads Calling Out Vulnerable Republicans’ Tax Hike on Gold Star Families

Senators Gardner, Collins, McSally, Ernst, Perdue, Tillis, and Cornyn voted to raise taxes on Gold Star families as part of their 2017 tax handout to billionaires and corporate special interests

Yesterday, the DSCC launched a series of digital ads in battleground states to hold Republican incumbents accountable for their painful tax hike on Gold Star families as part of the same 2017 Republican tax bill that gave massive handouts to wealthy CEOs and corporate special interests. While some Democrats and Republicans have been working together to reverse this cruel penalty, Senators Martha McSally, Cory Gardner, Joni Ernst and David Perdue appeared to decline to co-sponsor the bipartisan fix.

The Hill: Dem Senate campaign arm hits GOP lawmakers over Trump tax law

Key Points:

  • The Democratic Senate campaign arm is launching digital ads targeting seven Senate Republicans for their votes in favor of President Trump’s 2017 tax overhaul.
  • The five-figure ad campaign by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) takes particular aim at a provision in the law that raised the amount of taxes some military families pay on their survivor benefits.
  • “Cory Gardner voted for a tax law that HIKED taxes on Colorado Gold Star families, forcing some military families to pay thousands of dollars more in taxes on their survivor benefits,” one Facebook ad reads.
  • The DSCC’s latest ad campaign suggests that Democrats are hoping to seize on the 2017 tax law, which has struggled with low popularity ratings. An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released earlier this month found that just 27 percent of U.S. adults approve of the law.

Read more here about the DSCC’s work to hold Republicans accountable for their unfair tax hike for Gold Star families:

  • Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Senate Democrats’ campaign arm is running new Facebook ads against Georgia U.S. Sen. David Perdue. Their offensive highlights Perdue’s support for the 2017 tax overhaul, which included a provision that raised taxes on military survivor benefits for some Gold Star families. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is also hitting the first-term Republican for not being a co-sponsor over a proposed legislative fix for the problem. The ad buy is also targeting a handful of other GOP incumbents up for re-election next year.
  • Texas Tribune: National Democrats launched a digital ad today targeting U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, over his vote for the 2017 Republican tax overhaul. The Facebook spot from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee specifically cites reports that the law is making some military families pay more in taxes on their survivor benefits. “John Cornyn voted for a tax law that HIKED taxes on Texas Gold Star families,” the ad says. The DSCC said the spot was running as part of a “five-figure digital buy across battleground states.”
  • Colorado Pols: A press release from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee calls out Sen. Cory Gardner along with several other 2020 GOP vulnerables for a provision in the 2017 Trump tax cut legislation that’s being panned on both sides of the aisle for its “unintended” effects on military survivors… In the Senate, the Gold Star Family Tax Relief Act is sponsored by Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, but the legislation also has 28 other Senate cosponsors from both parties. Which leads to the obvious question–why isn’t Cory Gardner’s name on the bill too? … As the only major policy achievement Gardner can hang his hat on, it’s not working out very well. It’s almost as if Cory Gardner (wait for it) didn’t read the bill! Either that or he really thinks survivor benefits should be “unearned income?” Either way, it’s a nasty political eyesore that refusing to own only makes worse.
  • National Journal: BATTLE FOR THE SENATE: The DSCC launched digital ads Tuesday on Facebook targeting Republican incumbents in Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, North Carolina, and Texas over votes for Trump’s 2017 tax law. The ads cite recent news reports to criticize the senators for helping raise taxes on survivor benefits for some military families.
  • POLITICO: A preview of some future messaging for Senate Democrats: The DSCC is running a “five-figure” digital ad campaign against battleground Republicans, hitting them over a provision in the 2017 tax law that “raised the amount of taxes some military families pay on their survivor benefits,” per The Hill’s Max Greenwood.
