DSCC Chairman Senator Chris Van Hollen and DCCC Chairman Ben Ray Luján issued the following joint statement on the Republican shutdown:
“Tonight is disappointing because many Democrats and Republicans agree on so much, and so many of us have been working tirelessly to find common ground. We must extend the Children’s Health Insurance Program and fund disaster recovery for the tragedies that have rocked our communities in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. We must fix DACA and stop governing by short-term funding gimmicks that hurt our national defense and veterans, our work to fight the opioid epidemic and our economy.
“Still, Republicans control the House, the Senate and the White House, and those leaders have made clear their unwillingness to come together and compromise. Speaker Ryan, Majority Leader McConnell and President Trump are trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the country by Tweeting blame on Democrats.
“People are smarter than that. The American people know Republicans are in charge, shut down the government and will hold them and their candidates accountable in November.”
