According to a new CNN report, Mitch McConnell said today that if a Supreme Court vacancy occurs during next year’s presidential election, he would work to confirm a nominee appointed by President Trump. In 2016, McConnell cited the right of the voters in the presidential election to decide whether a Democrat or a Republican would fill that opening to justify his decision to block President Obama’s nominee. McConnell has used his spineless majority to abuse the Senate’s judicial confirmation process.
Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesman Stewart Boss issued the following statement on McConnell’s hypocritical Supreme Court reversal:
“After spending decades in Washington cozying up to billionaire donors and corporate CEOs, Mitch McConnell isn’t pretending to have any shred of integrity left and just admitted he put their interests first in deciding when to fill a Supreme Court vacancy. The two justices McConnell has pushed through the Senate side with corporate special interests and uncompromising ideologues at the expense of hardworking Americans and have tilted the court towards overturning or gutting Roe v. Wade, perpetuating a broken campaign finance system, and attacking civil rights. McConnell is promising more of the same, which is why he’s earned his place as one of the most toxic and unpopular senators in the country.”
