NEW DSCC AD: McConnell Puts Even More Military Funds at Risk After Losing Nearly $63 Million for Kentucky

McConnell voted to allow the president to raid millions from Kentucky military projects, now he’s refusing to prevent another cash grab

Pentagon documents revealed that without funding, the aging middle school at Fort Campbell “will continue to impair the overall education program for students

Following Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s vote today to put even more funding for Kentucky military construction projects at risk, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is launching a new digital ad campaign on Facebook holding him accountable for failing to stand up for Kentucky’s military communities.

Leader McConnell’s vote for President Trump’s sham emergency declaration has already cost Kentucky millions of dollars meant to replace a middle school where students are currently studying in “deficient, inadequate, and undersized facilities that do not accommodate the current student population.” Rather than own his failure of leadership on this reckless cash grab, McConnell’s response to this betrayal of Kentucky military families has been to blame and attack Democrats. Meanwhile, the Washington Post is reporting that officials are again considering diverting even more funds away from military projects across the country.

“Leader McConnell helped pave the way for this harmful raid on critical military construction funding, and he just voted again to uphold this bogus emergency declaration and allow the Trump administration to keep diverting money away from Kentucky military communities,” said DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss. “Even as the White House threatens to claw away even more money from Kentucky, McConnell is so craven that he voted to double down on enabling this reckless cash grab. Our new ad campaign will continue to hold Senator McConnell accountable for failing Kentucky military communities and refusing to stand up for his state’s servicemembers and military families.”

Read more about Mitch McConnell’s failure to put Kentucky first:

  • Lexington Courier-Journal: “A military project for a middle school at Fort Campbell Army base could be in limbo since President Donald Trump declared a national emergency Friday allowing him to reallocate funds for his proposed border wall. The $62 million project to construct Fort Campbell Middle School near the Tennessee/Kentucky border was one of the hundreds of military spending measures allocated in the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019. But the project could be on the chopping block.”
  • New York Times: “In normal times, the Fort Campbell middle school project would have a powerful political ally in Senator Mitch McConnell… But that was before Mr. Trump declared in February that there was a national emergency at the border with Mexico, allowing him to divert money from military projects without first getting approval from Congress. The next month, Mr. McConnell backed the president in a Senate vote on the national emergency declaration.”
  • Newsweek: “Fort Campbell Middle School, previously garnered attention in February or being under the gun of the budget reappropriation… The school, which is located on the Fort Campbell Army base along the Tennessee-Kentucky border, will cost an estimated $62 million to build. However, the entire budget for construction has been rerouted to the border wall. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, (R-KY), dismissed the questions about the school in February as ‘hypothetical’”
  • USA Today Editorial: “Apparently, the president has an expansive view of Mexico. An ambulatory care center at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina is, in his view, part of Mexico. So is… a middle school in Kentucky.”
  • Washington Post: “the military is seeking to repair a middle school at Fort Campbell in Kentucky, a project that has been championed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)… The Pentagon described conditions at the middle school as ‘substandard’ and told lawmakers in requesting $62.6 million to repair it that ‘the continued use of deficient, inadequate, and undersized facilities that do not accommodate the current student population will continue to impair the overall education program for students.’”
  • Daily Beast: “Among the notable items now on the backburner include $62 million for a middle school at Ft. Campbell in Kentucky… Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who is up for re-election too, will see roughly $60 million in projects for his state put on pause.”
