ON THIS DAY: Senator Joni Ernst’s Corporate Tax Giveaway Became an Attack On Pre-Existing Conditions Protections

Ernst Voted for Tax Giveaway With Toxic Anti-Health Care Provision & Refused to Say If She Supports Resulting Lawsuit to Gut Health Care Protections

If Lawsuit This Amendment “Sparked” Succeeds, “Protections for People With Pre-existing Conditions Would Be Wiped From the Books

Two years ago today, Senate Republicans introduced a proposal to repeal the Affordable Care Act’s coverage requirement as part of their corporate tax giveaway, laying the foundation for the toxic GOP lawsuit that threatens to end health protections Iowans rely on. Senator Joni Ernst voted for this tax giveaway, helping spark the dangerous lawsuit that could end critical health care protections including pre-existing conditions coverage, maternity care, and allowing kids to stay on their parents’ insurance until age 26.

“After using her tax taw to undermine and attack health care protections and make the lawsuit in court today to eliminate pre-existing conditions coverage possible, Senator Ernst has ducked questions about whether she supports this toxic lawsuit,” said DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss. “But you don’t need to be a lawyer to know this is a terrible deal for Iowans with pre-existing conditions. Instead of working to protect her constituents’ care, Ernst is more focused on protecting her political career, making it clear why Iowans can’t afford her reckless health care agenda.”

When asked about the toxic health care lawsuit her tax giveaway triggered, Senator Ernst said, “Um, I am not going to make a determination on that, I am not an attorney” — reminding Iowa voters that she’s not on their side when it comes to protecting coverage for pre-existing conditions, and revealing why Ernst and vulnerable Senate Republicans have resorted to pushing sham bills that “don’t actually protect sick people” and trying to hide the fallout from this harmful lawsuit until after next year’s election.

The DSCC has been “laser focused” on holding Senator Ernst accountable for her role in the GOP’s anti-health care lawsuit, running digital ads spotlighting her consistent failure to protect Iowans’ care.
