QUICK CLIP: As Some Republican Senators Demand Answers, Cory Gardner “Came to Defend the President” From Bipartisan Criticism

9News Denver: “Some GOP Senators Criticized the Trump Administration’s Briefing on Iran and Soleimani’s Death. Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner Is Not One of Them.”

Senator Cory Gardner “came to defend the president” on the Senate floor yesterday, as Democratic and Republican Senators alike slammed the administration’s handling of a briefing on military action in Iran.

Cory Gardner once ran ads as a Senate candidate in 2014 promising that “when my party is wrong, I’ll say it.” Now the most vulnerable Republican incumbent in the country, Gardner has traded any pretense of independence for “unbreakable” support for Donald Trump in a transparent “political calculation” that puts loyalty to Mitch McConnell and Washington Republicans ahead of Coloradans.

WATCH:

9News’ Kyle Clark: “Some Republican Senators have been criticizing the Trump administration for their handling of this. They say that a briefing did not provide justification of why the U.S. took out General Soleimani. Colorado’s Republican Senator, Cory Gardner, came to defend the president.”

Read more about Senator Gardner’s “political calculation” to pledge his “unbreakable” support to Trump:

  • Associated Press: “It’s a political calculation that values loyalty to Trump and his base over any bipartisan appeal… after Trump’s election, Gardner’s criticism of the president has been muted… Meanwhile, Gardner has backed many of the president’s priorities, including votes for Trump’s health care proposal, tax plans and conservative judges.”
  • Colorado Sun: “Asked whether there is a red line that Trump could cross that would lead him to abandon his support of the president, Gardner didn’t directly answer.”
  • Denver Post: “‘Gardner has chosen… to try to be as publicly quiet as possible about various issues, including Trump, impeachment and other important political issues of the day that are at all related to Trump,’ said Kyle Saunders, a professor of political science at Colorado State University.”
