QUICK CLIP: Lindsey Graham Says Medicare and Social Security are “Promises We Can’t Keep”

After voting to add nearly $2 trillion to the debt with a tax handout to the rich and giant corporations, Graham advocates targeting programs hardworking Americans have earned

In an interview on Fox News last night, Senator Lindsey Graham said that the solution to the nation’s growing debt crisis is to put Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid on the chopping block:

Graham: “Fix entitlements… We’re in debt because we made promises we can’t keep to Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid. That’s why we’re in debt.”

Just over a year and a half ago, Graham advocated and voted for the Republican tax law – a “lopsided giveaway to corporations” and the rich that is on track to add nearly $2 trillion to the national debt. Jaime Harrison is an educator, community leader, and public servant who’s running to challenge Senator Graham and bring a new kind of leadership to South Carolina.

Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spokesperson Stewart Boss released the following statement:

“After voting to give billionaires and corporations massive new tax breaks without paying for it, Senator Graham’s plan to tackle the rising debt is putting Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid on the chopping block. Senator Graham voted to spike the deficit for a tax giveaway to his special interest donors, but now he has no problem saying we have to break our promise to South Carolina seniors and target the hard-earned benefits they rely on and paid into their entire adult lives. These misguided priorities are out of step with voters across the political spectrum, and South Carolinians will hold Senator Graham accountable.”
