Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chair Senator Chris Van Hollen discussed how strong Democratic incumbents and challengers have shifted the most challenging political map in decades, and how Republicans have spent the closing weeks of the midterms struggling to defend their unpopular health care records. Senate Democrats really faced the toughest political map in 60 years so it’s remarkable we’re in as strong a position as we are and that is a testament to our Senators and to our Senate Democratic candidates who are running as candidates who are going to stand up for their states. Their job is to put politics aside, stand up for their states. Sometimes that means working with President Trump if it’s good for their state and sometimes it means opposing the president if it’s bad for their state, like the president’s effort, the Republicans’ effort of taking away protection for pre-existing conditions – a big issue in all of these races.

In terms of the Republican seats that are very competitive right now – Nevada, Arizona, Tennessee, Texas, Mississippi may go to a special runoff – and the reason is you’ve got Republicans running in all of those states who have betrayed their voters primarily on the issue that is at the top of mind for voters around the country, which is health care issues and taking away protections for people who have pre-existing health conditions.

What we see right now is a situation that is a whole lot better than anyone would have predicted 18 months ago when Republicans were saying that they might win another eight seats and have a filibuster-proof majority in the United States Senate. No one is talking about that right now.
