Senate Republicans Have Already Backed the Kind of Cuts to Medicaid, Safety Net Programs Proposed in Trump’s Budget

After the GOP Tax Giveaway to Corporations and Billionaires Exploded the Deficit, Washington Republicans Now Want to Reduce the Deficit with Cuts to Critical Safety Net Programs That Support Seniors and Most Vulnerable

With A GOP-Controlled Senate That Refuses to Stand Up to President Trump And Has Long Backed Efforts to Gut Earned Benefits, Republican Incumbents Own This Harmful Agenda

The White House released its budget proposal today with plans to enact “steep reductions” in safety net programs like Medicare, Medicaid, children’s health insurance, Social Security’s disability benefits, nutrition assistance and more. After the GOP tax law passed in 2017 exploded the deficit and added nearly $2 trillion to the national debt, Washington Republicans are now trying to reduce the deficit on the backs of America’s seniors and most vulnerable by slashing spending on critical programs.

Senate Republicans who will be facing voters in November have been part of “longstanding GOP efforts” to dramatically reduce federal spending on earned benefits and have built their own lengthy records in Washington of supporting efforts to gut programs like Medicare and Social Security.

“The White House’s budget blueprint is a plan that reflects Republican priorities in 2020 — keep attacking vital programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security,” said DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss. “What’s more alarming is that Republican incumbents already have records of rewarding their big donors while supporting spending cuts to programs that provide health care and economic security to our nation’s seniors and most vulnerable.”
