Statement on Failed Former Congressman Jason Lewis’ Entry Into Minnesota Senate Race

DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss released the following statement in response to former Congressman Jason Lewis’ announcement that he will run for Senate in Minnesota:

“Not only is Jason Lewis running on the same toxic record that cost him his House seat, he will also have to explain the disgusting comments surfaced from his right-wing radio days attacking and disparaging women, minorities, the LGBTQ community, and people with disabilities. Minnesota voters rejected Lewis for cutting taxes on the wealthy and big corporations and voting to gut coverage protections for people with pre-existing conditions. He lost their trust while Senator Tina Smith is working hard to get things done for the people of Minnesota. Since her decisive victory in November, Senator Smith has continued to be an effective voice for Minnesota and she will keep fighting for hardworking Minnesota families when she’s elected again to a full term.”

No Republican has won statewide in Minnesota since 2006, and Senator Tina Smith’s commanding victory of more than 10 points in 2018 will make this seat a difficult target for national Republicans. President Trump is underwater in Minnesota and his net approval in the state has decreased by 19 percentage points since he took office. Nathan Gonzales recently shifted the Minnesota Senate race “from Likely Democratic to Solid Democratic.”
