Unelected Senator Martha McSally Votes to Defend Toxic “Junk” Health Plans That Can Deny Coverage for Pre-Existing Conditions

McSally-backed “junk plans” opposed by medical experts can have “catastrophic costs” & “deny coverage based on consumers’ pre-existing health conditions

Unelected Senator Martha McSally voted today to defend toxic junk health care plans “so skimpy that they offer no meaningful coverage” — failing a critical “litmus test for anyone who claims to support protecting people with preexisting conditions.” These junk plans are not required to cover pre-existing conditions, prescription drugs, or maternity benefits, and “generally refuse” to provide coverage to people who are pregnant or who have a history of cancer or other diagnoses, yet Senator McSally just voted again to promote these harmful plans at Arizonans’ expense.

“Senator McSally’s support for these reckless junk health plans makes it clear why she has no credibility when it comes to protecting Arizonans’ health care,” said DSCC spokesperson Stewart Boss. “After working for years to gut her constituents’ care, Senator McSally has said ‘it’s not [her] role’ to weigh in on the toxic GOP lawsuit to tear down critical health care protections, but by throwing her support behind these junk plans, McSally is proving she has no problem exposing Arizonans to higher costs, unreliable care, and weaker protections for critical benefits like pre-existing conditions coverage and maternity care.”

In addition to refusing to oppose these junk plans, which the American Cancer Society and American Heart Association have vocally opposed, unelected Senator Martha McSally made headlines when she infamously said, “let’s get this f***ing thing done” before voting for her party’s efforts to gut health care protections. Not long after, McSally admitted she was “getting [her] ass kicked” over her toxic health care record — but that hasn’t stopped her from working to tear down Arizonans’ health care — including protections for pre-existing conditions, maternity care, and allowing kids to stay on their parents until age 26.
