False NRSC Ads Pulled For Second Time in Three Weeks

MSNBC: GOP ads are pulled from the airwaves for being dishonest (again)

Multiple news stories are highlighting how “TV stations in North Carolina pulled an ad by the campaign arm for Senate Republicans” after they “determined it contained false statements.” The NRSC has now “had two television ads pulled over the course of three weeks,” an “unusual and embarrassing” development.

See for yourself:

The News & Observer: NC TV stations pull ad attacking Senate candidate Beasley over its ‘false statements

  • An attack ad against U.S. Senate candidate Cheri Beasley and her campaign no longer will be seen on some North Carolina TV stations after Cox Media Group determined it contained false statements.

  • Six other media outlets have pulled the ad… while their legal teams review the statements made against Beasley.

  • The ad incorrectly alleges that Beasley set a child pornography offender free.

  • Dory MacMillan, Beasley’s campaign spokeswoman, said the “false attack was rightfully taken off television.”

New York Times: North Carolina TV stations pull an attack ad against Cheri Beasley, a Democrat running for Senate

  • Television stations in North Carolina made the unusual decision on Friday to take down an attack ad against Cheri Beasley, a Democratic Senate candidate, after complaints that the ad falsely accused Ms. Beasley of freeing a man convicted on charges of possessing lewd images of children when she served as chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.

  • On Friday, five TV stations in Raleigh and Charlotte said they would pull the ad or that they had “paused” it pending an examination of its claims.

  • On Thursday, two Charlotte stations took the ad off the air. A representative for the stations, WXAN and WSCO, explained in an email… that the ad’s claim about Ms. Beasley “is in error, as it appears the defendant was not set free” by the State Supreme Court decision.

  • Dory MacMillan, a spokeswoman for Ms. Beasley, said, “Washington Republicans have been caught lying.”

  • “Voters know Cheri worked with law enforcement to hold violent offenders accountable, and she will continue to keep our communities safe as North Carolina’s next U.S. Senator,” Ms. MacMillan said in a statement.

  • Three weeks ago… a National Republican Senatorial Committee was pulled from New Hampshire airwaves after it claimed Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan, during her tenure as governor, increased gas prices 23 percent.

  • The problem, of course, was the attack ad wasn’t true: Gas prices in New Hampshire actually fell during Hassan’s time as governor and the New Hampshire Public Radio report cited by the NRSC didn’t say what Republicans claim it said. The commercial was taken down on May 19.

  • Last week, as The New York Times reported, the National Republican Senatorial Committee ran into a little more trouble. This time, it was an attack ad targeting North Carolina’s Cheri Beasley, falsely accusing her of freeing “a child porn offender” during her tenure chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court.

  • For those keeping score, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has now had two television ads pulled over the course of three weeks.
