As Senate Republicans return today from a two-week vacation without having passed additional coronavirus relief for struggling communities, voter disapproval of the Trump administration is escalating and putting “endangered GOP senators under pressure.”
Republicans are facing growing scrutiny for enabling Trump’s efforts that threaten to undermine the public health response to coronavirus and their own mishandling of the spiraling pandemic. They’re also in the spotlight for supporting a president who refuses to commit to accepting the results of the election if he loses, allowing a bill to restore key Voting Rights Act protections to sit on Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s desk for over 200 days, and hypocritically plotting to fill another seat on the Supreme Court, even if they lose in November.
Here are key questions for Senate Republicans to answer as they return to Washington:
1. Do you agree with President Trump that the next coronavirus relief package should not include additional funding for testing, contact tracing, and the CDC?
2. If there is a Supreme Court vacancy this year, do you agree with Senator Joni Ernst that the Senate should hold a vote to confirm a nominee — even a lame-duck appointment if Republicans lose the election?
3. President Trump refuses to commit to accepting the 2020 election results. Do you think he’s wrong?
4. Will you demand Mitch McConnell end his obstruction of legislation to restore key protections of the Voting Rights Act?
