DSCC spokesperson Shea Necheles released the following statement on today’s alarmingly high jobless claims numbers revealing “ongoing hardship” as Senate Republicans continue to oppose the Democratic majority’s efforts to quickly deliver COVID-19 relief to the American people:
“The economic pain across the country as Americans continue to lose their jobs and struggle to find work in the middle of this pandemic confirms just how critical President Biden and Senate Democrats’ rescue plan is right now. While Republicans in Washington keep playing political games and refuse to learn the lessons of their failed response, Democrats are laser-focused on taking action to address the challenges we’re facing so we can put this pandemic behind us and get people back to work. This comprehensive relief package of direct checks, resources for vaccine distribution and testing, aid to safely reopen schools, emergency unemployment insurance and so much more is moving forward and help is on the way.”
There is broad, overwhelming public support across party lines for Democrats’ relief plan. The American Rescue Plan includes a number of critical provisions: a new round of direct relief checks to people who need them, expanded vaccine distribution to get shots into people’s arms faster, extended emergency unemployment insurance, protections for renters and homeowners, billions of dollars in aid to state and local governments to keep first responders and health care workers on the job, resources to ensure schools can safely reopen, boosts to programs supporting small businesses and unemployed workers, and much more.
