DSCC QUICK TAKES: CORTEZ MASTO ADDRESSES DEM CONVENTION—SENATE REPUBLICANS STILL ON VACATION—MCSALLY WORRIED ABOUT LOSING GOP VOTERS

DSCC CHAIR SENATOR CATHERINE CORTEZ MASTO ADDRESSES DEM CONVENTION. DSCC Chair and Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto addressed the Democratic National Convention last night, where she defended vote-by-mail as a safe option for voters, rebuked the president’s attacks on the Postal Service, and highlighted the importance of electing a Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate. Read Senator Cortez Masto’s full remarks here.

TRUMP’S UNEMPLOYMENT STUNT “MAY ONLY PROVIDE THREE-WEEK BOOST” BUT REPUBLICANS ARE STILL ON VACATION. A new Washington Post report further details the mess that Senate Republicans created when they let emergency unemployment relief expire nearly a month ago. Trump’s unemployment stunt – a chaotic executive order enabled by Senate Republicans – “may only provide [a] three week boost” and some state officials even fear that the “confusing criteria may prevent them from sending any new aid at all.” Despite the urgent crisis that Americans across the country face, Mitch McConnell and his caucus are on day five of their latest summer vacation. MCSALLY WORRIED ABOUT LOSING GOP VOTERS TO KELLY. A new AP report highlights unelected Senator Martha McSally’s latest nightmare: losing Trump voters to Democratic Challenger Mark Kelly. It’s not a new fear for the vulnerable Republican incumbent––split ticket voters were pivotal to McSally’s loss in 2018 when she “received 140,000 fewer votes than Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, who was comfortably reelected on the same ballot.” And things don’t look any better in 2020 for McSally. Last week, the Arizona Republic put it bluntly: “if 2018 was treacherous for Republican Senate candidate Martha McSally, 2020 could be even more so” as the Arizona Senate race looks likely to come down to “the suburbs of Maricopa County — the voters who split their ballots in 2018 between Republican candidates and Democratic candidates” and already rejected McSally in 2018. HICK TROLLS GARDNER WITH LATEST FACEBOOK AD. After Senator Cory Gardner was caught last week running Facebook ads touting his close relationship with President Trump across the country – except in the one state he’s running in, Democratic challenger John Hickenlooper trolled the vulnerable incumbent by running a new Facebook ad in Colorado calling Gardner out for his deliberate attempt to deceive voters about his chumminess with the increasingly unpopular president. While he attempts to hide his support for Trump, Gardner “doesn’t go out of his way to forcefully denounce the president” with whom he’s stood “100%.”  HuffPost: John Hickenlooper Trolls Cory Gardner With Pro-Trump Facebook Ad

GARDNER GIVES “FEW DIRECT ANSWERS” ON USPS. Gardner continues his pattern of dodging questions on issues important to voters. In the latest example, the vulnerable incumbent faced questions “about slowdowns at the U.S. Postal Service but gave few direct answers.” This comes after Gardner was caught last week parroting Trump’s talking points bashing nationwide vote by mail, despite being elected by it. DEJOY “DONATED BIG” TO GOP SENATORS – NOW THEY’RE “SILENT” ON USPS. A new Salon report today looks at how Postmaster General Louis DeJoy “is a fountain of money” for Senate Republicans, who have largely been silent as Trump blocks funding for the Postal Service, potentially disenfranchising voters in 46 states and delaying delivery of important mail like prescriptions and Social Security benefits that millions of Americans rely on. Among the vulnerable Republicans on the ballot this year who’ve taken campaign cash from DeJoy are Senators Lindsey Graham, Thom Tillis, and Martha McSally and failed politician John James. DeJoy has also “regularly maxed out with tens of thousands of annual contributions” to the National Republican Senatorial Committee. While Democrats have prioritized USPS funding in the next coronavirus relief package, Senate Republicans are blocking that funding and refusing to negotiate. Salon: DeJoy donated big to GOP senators up for re-election; they’re still silent on USPS

JAIME HARRISON CALLS ON GRAHAM TO RETURN DEJOY’S MONEY. After the Salon report revealed how vulnerable incumbent Senator Lindsey Graham took campaign cash from Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, Democratic challenger Jaime Harrison is calling on Graham to return the “$5,000 from the man currently destroying the USPS.”
